Conducting a Questionnaire

During the research process of the FMP I wanted to further get an understanding of how the general public felt about Slapstick comedy as I had researched myself to see what I felt worked but my opinion isn’t necessarily the same as everyone so it was important that I wasn’t only creating a film that appealed to me but also the general public.

The results showed that most people do find slap stick comedy (85.7%) which was good to hear but I needed more information, therefore why I asked the respondents to elaborate. Most of the respondents believed that the form of comedy is funny because it is often disjointed from reality so doesn’t need to be taken seriously but the most interesting point that someone said is that In terms of animation exaggerated violence is funny as it allows animators to play with visuals but in terms of other media violence is used in unison with a. joke, and I thought this was really interesting and perhaps something I needed to implement into my cartoon, to add more weight to the film rather than just using violence for the sake of violence. To further understand when violence is too much, I asked audiences to tell me what they didn’t like about violence being used as a form of comedy and most noted that when violence depicts something in society that should never be joked about and could bring up uncomfortable thoughts to audiences but also overused comedy which is basic and has no weight. It was important for me to know about these problems people have with the genre of slapstick as I need to tailor to as wide of an audience as possible in my film and so knowing the wider audiences’ feelings really helps me to understand the problems and avoid them.

This process of conducting a Questionnaire was very helpful for me and allowed me to understand the genre and how it resonates with different audiences. It has allowed me to understand further what I need to avoid within my film and moving forward into the development process I need to ensure I avoid these to tailor to maximum audiences. Moving forward I’d like to further understand what makes the Slapstick genre funny by looking at an article about why we find things funny. I know that I have looked at a lot of sources but most the time I analysed stuff from my perspective, and I think it is equally important to understand the genre from a more psychological standpoint.
