Creating a large Collage

For the afternoon task, we were asked to create rubbings on large A1 sheet of paper, looking for textures that, we could use later on for our final collage piece. I decided to go outside and try and find metal textures such as drainage covers and anything that had an artificial texture apposed to natural qualities. To create my rubbings I used the colours green, as I felt this related to nature but also sickness, as well as more rustic and artificial colours, with browns and black (unfortunately I didn't photograph the textures by themselves but you can see them in the final collage). I was asked to create a large scale collage that reflected the feeling of Bangladesh. The first thought that came to mind were the types of housing that are in the country, flooded with streams of toxic water. The materials I had at hand were, corrugated card and my paper rubbings, so I started using techniques from earlier on in the day such as tearing and cutting to try and damage the cardboard, revealing the corrugated texture that was underneath. I felt that this reflected the corrugated metal that is patch-worked, across housing in Bangladesh. My intention for the piece was to create this textured piece which had this build up of different textures and visuals, reflecting to this sense of the housing being built up of different types of scraps. The use of metal rubbings actually worked to my advantage for this piece as it fit the theme and aesthetic I was going for. With oil pastels I choose to rub into the corrugated texture, using greys and browns to appear like a rusting and tarnished piece of metal. In my opinion I don't think this piece is very good, It does fit my intentions of what I was going for but I don't think the outcome looks particularly pleasant. I do think the visual style reflects the appearance of the built up structure within the Bangladesh housing, but it is just ripped up cardboard stuck on top of eachother. This reflects to the theme of protect, through how it is presenting the living conditions of Bangladesh homes, similarly to how there houses are built up of pieces of metal that they find, I have similarly gone through this process but instead with recycled bit of paper and textures. I would hope through this piece the viewer would be able to understand the poor housing and living conditions that people in the world have to go through on a daily basis and perhaps this may encourage a need for change.
